Hi Thomas, It's a locale problem,the default character set for RH8 is Unicode. Abiword is not Unicode-aware. Use any version of Abiword, the one that comes with RH8 is fine. The fix Red Hat gives in the release notes says start Abiword this way: $ env LANG=C abiword This removes all localization. I don't know if that will work for you, you could also set your locale: $ env LANG=de_DE abiword This may be the better option, to get a complete German character set. I don't know for sure, this is all new to me. See http://ftp.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/http/related/iso639.txt and http://userpage.chemie.fu-berlin.de/diverse/doc/ISO_3166.html for country and language codes. Use the 'locale' command to see what is installed on your system, 'man locale' gives all the options.
