Like I said before, it is very possible that your AbiWord was built with ispell support and not pspell support. If you're unsure, you can do:

ldd /path/to/AbiWord_d | grep spell

if you see aspell or pspell in there, the aspell dictionaries should work. If you see nothing, then it was compiled with our builtin ispell support. Grab a new source tree and configure --with-pspell

This is most likely a Debian problem (one related to whomever built your 1.0.3+cvs deb) and not an AbiWord one.

Your abiword is probably built with ispell support and not
aspell/pspell. It's just a guess, but probably a good one. I have
aspell set up, and de_DE, en_US, and da_DK working fine.
I uninstalled ispell and all ispell dictionaries and I have now only
aspell and the English aspell dictionary works with abiword.
I also tested with aspell-da now and it doesn't work either.
