I am running AbiWord 1.0.3 on a WindowsME machine and I am experiencing the exact same issue with the box character showing up in files I have brought into AbiWord from Word or from Microsoft Works (saved as RTF files). It seems to have something to do with formatting because if I try to manually delete the box characters and the numbers next to them, text that did look fine suddently turns into gibberish.
