Many thanks for your input. Yes the Doctors come via a Combo from a 
relational Doctors table, used to populate various other tables. Am 
looking at Robins work as looks very helpful. 

I suppose what I'm getting at is that since DLookup is a bound 
control, substituting any default values pulled through from the 
parent table is not a straighforward process, even though the 
substituted value is stored in another table from the parent?

Will post if I come up with anything else. Many thanks again to all.
