It seems you have been trying to resolve this for quite some time now.  I am
not sure I will be much help but will try.
You need to create some way to   your vendors, i.e. HP vendors will have a
vendor number between one and 99, IBM will have vendor number between 100
and 199 so on and so forth.  With this method you will be able to categorize
vendors.
You are not clear as to how you determine your "buckets".  Are these field
entries?  Are they resolved from a date?
I don't think you need a cross tab query.  I believe the problem is
identifying and categorizing (grouping) your vendors.

The type of question you are asking about having the "buckets" as you call
them sounds like something a CrossTab Query might be able to do.  Look up
"CrossTab Query" in the help file, or use the "CrossTab Query Wizard" to
achieve the result.
