Hi all I have got the sound back again by setting the driver to not use the Creative driver but using the Microsoft USB sound driver (suggested by one of our IT guys here at UTS).
I still do not know why the problem occurred as we have been using this device for some years. The only times something similar occurs is after Windows updates. They would replace the Creative driver with the SoundMax driver (as a SoundMax is on the mother board) but I'd just go into the RAT and change it back. This time RAT didn't detect the Creative driver at all. I think a Windows update has screwed something. Thanks to Nikkos Svoboda, LSU Department of Mathematics, for some suggestions.
