AG details at: https://agschedule.ncsa.uiuc.edu:443/meetingdetails.asp?MID=13415 Hope to see you there. Paul Mercer The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, in cooperation with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Music Department will be presenting Renown double bassist Robert Black in an AG Lecture-Performance on Friday, February 3 at 12 noon EST. Noted in a recent press review as "an amazing tour de force," Robert Black's interests range from traditional orchestral and chamber music to solo recitals, collaborations with actors, music with computers and MIDI, movement-based improvisations with dancers, and live action- painting performances with painters. A tireless champion and promoter of new music, to date, he has commissioned new pieces from more than 50 composers and has a special interest in working with young or emerging composers. He has also collaborated or performed with a diverse number of musicians from D.J. Spooky to Meridth Monk to Cecil Taylor. Acclaimed by the New York Times for his "cheerful virtuosity" Robert regularly presents recitals throughout North and South America, Europe, Australia, and Japan, appearing at major festivals on radio and television broadcasts and as artist-in-residence. In addition to solo performances, Robert performs with the Bang On A Can All Stars (New York City's hard hitting new music ensemble). Concerning one of his live concerts, the The Miam Sun-Sentinal proclaimed "If you think that a single double bassist can't possible give a riveting concert, think again. Black is an astonishing virtuoso who can make the bass sing like a cello or handle bursts of notes as cleanly as a violin." His solo CD, State of the Bass, was released on O.O. Discs to critical acclaim. Mode Records released his second solo disc, Look She Said - The Complete Solo Bass Music by Christian Wolff. He also has recorded for Sony Classical, Point/Polygram, Koch International, CRI, Neuma Records, Gasparo, Opus One, Artifact Recordings, and Folkways Records. Robert received his formal education at the Hartt School and at the University of North Texas. He is a professor of music at the Hartt School at the University of Hartford (Hartford, CT) and the Festival Eleazar Carvalho (Fortaleza Brazil).
