Hi Kiran and others,
About three weeks back I had my new laptop (Inspiron 640M) with dual core
processor, which means physically there are two processors inside, with 512
RAM and 60 GB SATA Hard drive.
Besides that, it has got four USB ports, two at the back and two on the
right side. The ex-fan is on your left while working on it.
Now before I really come to its performance, I would like to clear that out
of 60 GB that the Dell claims, we have the access to only 50 gb and about 9
GB is hidden, with 1.2 GB for dell restore, and about 7 GB for the graphics
display card.
The key board layout is completely normal with minor changes and
modifications.
the battery back up is approximately a little less than four hours, but it
would really depend as to what sort of applications you are using + the
screen contrast while working on battery, which would determine the actual
performance of your battery back up.
Until now, I'm completely satisfied with its performance and with the dell
technical support that they provide over the telephone directly from
Bangalore.
The only problem so far which I'm facing is that if my internet connection
is set up manually with username and password, and if it is connected with
my LAN card, the computer would hang very badly if the ADSL modem is
switched off abruptly, or you unplug the network cable. The dell team is
reported to be working diligently to determine the exact cause as to why is
this happening. I have two solutions to this problem for the time being, 1.
I connect my ADSL modem directly, where the information related to the
username and the password is stored in the router itself, and second, I
choose to connect my internet through the USB cable instead of LAN card. The
dell has assured me that in case of no solution, they'll replace my
motherboard.
One of the basic reasons for going in for a Dell notebook is that they
provide the onsite warranty which very few companies offer. The second thing
is that whatever operation is required, it'll be done at your desk only,
which eventually means that your product will never see you off even
temporarily. However, this is their claim and it has not yet been tested.
I think it should be enough for now, if anybody interest to know anything
specific, you can write on the list or privately to my ID.
