Thanks Rohan and all others who helped.
I had put off the operation for sometime.
I had to try it twice or thrice. Initially the icon for messenger 
disappeared from the start menu but the program remained in tact.
Finally, it seems I have got rid of it.
I have live messenger now, fortunately it does not bother me at all.
