New Cell Phone Option for People with Low Vision
New to the market is a cell phone geared to Baby Boomers, their parents,
and people with low vision. The Jitterbug, from GreatCall, has two models.
The "Jitterbug Dial" is for people who want to use it like a regular cell
phone, and the "Jitterbug One Touch" is for those who want it for a few
calls or emergencies only. Both are priced at $147. When you buy these
phones, they come preprogrammed with 15 of your most frequently dialed
numbers. You or your Jitterbug operator can then add up to 35 more names
and numbers if you wish.

The most important feature of these phones is that they are simplified and
customized to you. Both models have large backlit buttons and the screens
are bright with a larger than normal font size ranging from a nine point
font to 36 point font.
When placing a call with the Jitterbug Dial model, you can have the
Jitterbug operator do it for you, you can speak the name of a person in
your phone list and the phone will dial by voice, you can scroll through
and select a name from your phone list, or you can dial the number
yourself.

The Jitterbug One Touch has three large buttons: Operator, 911, and one to
which you assign a most frequently called number. With this model, if you
need to call a number which is not in your call list, you press the
Operator button and they will dial it for you.

The phones are hearing aid-compatible and have an adjustable ringer and
call volume. The menus are much more simplified than other off-the-shelf
cell phones. These phones do not have call waiting, picture taking, or
text messaging capabilities.
