I completely agree with the judiciousness of members in revealing their
personal info in their signatures. However open access to the archive
through internet search engines such as Google does make the list to be
infiltrated by commercial advertisers and others with the motive of
spreading malicious things. A series of mails that we received yesterday for
example with the removal request itself could be the result of such open
access policy. While the site at the moment may be able to filter out those
malicious things, those at the negative side are becoming more intelligent
day by day and allowing them to access the archive is in my view an open
invitation to such forces.

Denying search engine access to list archives defeats the whole purpose of
archiving the list.
Although one can go to the Access India site and then search through the
archive, it is a lot faster to search for messages in the Access India
archive via Google.
As you mention, listers should be judicious about what they choose to reveal
in their signatures.

There is one other thing though that I couldn't solve. When I type my cell
phone number, then the Google search engine catches one of my previous
messages from the access India archive. So I am just wondering whether
something can be done by the moderator to protect access India's archival
messages from such search engines. It also clearly shows the risk of
including phone numbers in ones signature. I will be careful from now on.

Vetri.

For your information......

Google has implemented a new feature which enables you
to type a
telephone
number into the search bar and hit enter and you will
be given the
person's
name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will
get a map to the
person's house. Everyone should be aware of this! It's
a nationwide
reverse
telephone book.

If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can
now look it up
to
find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are
obvious, and
alarming.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or
blocked. I tried my
number and it came up along with the mapquest and
directions straight
to
our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself,
and encourage
all of
you to do the same. Quite scary.

Please look up your own number.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped,
go to: google
(
http://www.google.
com/ ) Type your phone number in
the search bar
(i.e.
555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK
Google from divulging
your private information, simply click on your
telephone number and
then
click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours.

Check your own number and although this may not apply
to you if you
have an
unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but
you may know
someone
who needs to know this.
