The truth of the "competition" with VISTA Support (personal opinion piece) > > By Jeff Bishop > > As a personal blogger with my own set of opinions, beliefs, and standards, I nevertheless do my utmost to be as objective as possible in my postings. I have always believed that not only my readers deserve this, but those about whom I write deserve it as well. > > So, in the name of fairness, fair play, and an honest sense of incredulity, I feel I must post the following comparison of how both Jaws and Window Eyes do regarding the new operating system. Some may view this as an attack against one company; I view it however as the necessity to defend one company against the unfair attack of the other. > > I guess what I really long for is a market driven by hones competition and mutual respect, in which each company touts its features, without feeling the necessity for belittling what it believes to be the competition. Our marketplace is too small for small-mindedness. So, when I see the values of honorable advertising and mutual respect being violated, I must say something. > > Freedom Scientific recently posted their second public beta for VISTA. Let's examine the new feature list and determine if the "competition" stacks up. > > This public beta release now supports the User Account Control (UAC) security feature in Windows Vista. > > Window-Eyes has had this for months. > > JAWS speech and braille is now available when the log on screen or the CTRL+ ALT+DEL security screens appear. > > Again, Window-Eyes works fine here as well. Try launching JAWS on VISTA and press control+alt+delete and see how long it takes to come up. > > The Automatically Start JAWS option is now available in the Basics Dialog with the additional choice of user specific login preferences. > > Again, Window-Eyes has this feature as well. They even mimic the user interface experience of Window-Eyes somewhat. I guess copying is the best form of flattery. > > JAWS is constantly reading gadget updates to provide you with real time information. > > Again, this was demonstrated by Doug at CSUN in a public forum. They may be able to get to the dynamic content without refreshing their virtual buffer, but I honestly don't consider this a new feature. This is just something that was their due to the feature added in the XP/2000/2003 release and comes along for the heck of it. > > When using and navigating the Start menu, JAWS provides speech and braille support for Windows Vista functionality and keeps pace with Windows Vista as it announces what is happening as the operating system updates the Start Menu. This means that when you open the Start menu, JAWS speaks and shows in braille that the focus is in the Start Search edit field. JAWS also announces text that you enter into the edit field and the associated Start Menu item. > > For example, when you open the Start menu, JAWS announces Enter Search Term. If you type the letters c o n in the search field, Windows Vista associates this entry with the Control Panel and its associated group, and moves its focus to that item. As a result, JAWS announces Programs, which is the group, Control Panel, which is the item, and then the list index, such as 1 of 3. This is far superior to what the competition is currently able to do. > > Finally, if you navigate up and down the Start menu, JAWS not only announces the highlighted items with speech and braille, but it will also announce when you enter a new item group and the number of items in that group. > > Again, all of this is supported. > > In Microsoft Outlook 2007, the AutoComplete feature is turned on by default. As you enter an e-mail address, Outlook begins to populate the To, CC, or BCC edit box with suggested e-mail addresses that you have previously entered. JAWS now announces these addresses as they appear in the edit box. > > Again, already supported. > > JAWS now correctly announces the Volume Slider controls available in Windows Vista. > > Again, already supported. > > As you can see, it looks as though Freedom Scientific is still playing catch up with the "competition" in VISTA. Perhaps a FSCast demonstrating Window-Eyes along side of JAWS to show where they are "far superior" then the competition is in order? BTW, I am more then happy for public comments if anyone feels that these perceptions are inaccurate in anyway. In my opinion, I don't think they are. I would even be happy to write a retraction if warranted. > > Posted: May 18 2007, 02:50 PM by Jeff Bishop > > > http://thedesertskies.com/archive/2007/05/18/the-truth-of-the-quot-competiti on-quot-with-vista-support-personal-opinion-piece.aspx
