KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) -- Twenty-three teachers have been given an intensive course in mental arithmetic, the use of the brain to calculate, proven to enable visually impaired students to excel in the subject. Dr Dino Wong, founder of the system and president of the Universal Concept in Mental Arithmetic System (UC MAS), Global Education Group, said 21 teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas, a special school for the visually impaired in Jalan Batu here and another two from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Tanjung Malim, Perak attended the two-day training. Organised by UC MAS in cooperation with the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) and the school, it was to ensure that visually impaired students could be given the edge in the subject, he told Bernama at the closing of the course here Friday. He said visually impaired students generally performed poorly in Mathematics and Science. "However, mental arithmetic can help them excel in the subject since they just need to use the abacus by touching the beads and mentally absorb the calculation. "If sighted students use this programme, they would become less focused since their eyes would wander and they get distracted. "This is why we considered having this programme to help them (blind students). They have an advantage in learning the technique because of their better natural power of concentration," he added.
