I will also add that a very small bar code can actually contain text of a whole page or many pages. Thus this bar code reader can acutually replace OCR technology. A korian company demonstrated its use through a book which had a bar code on upper right hand corner of the page and to read it all you had to do was to keep a small device at the upper corner of the page and click a button once and the information was sent to the laptop which started reading the complete page. Since it was not OCR, it had no mistakes and contained complete formatting including tables etc. Its wider use required that every printed book should start containing the bar coded text of the complete page on every page.

It is not micro processor driven. I think the NFB Kurzweil reader also has bar code reading capability.
