I remember my college days...I used to wear a watch with white background with black thick arms. Note that silver or metalic arms may be difficult difficult to identify and in black dials it usually happens to have silver / gold arms and its shining property makes it difficult in viewing at certain light conditions. It's my experience and ppl may differ...
