Hi Aaruni, Ah your situation is similar to mine except that I navigate in the office and jabbing your colleagues with a stick is not the best idea though it is extremely tempting. Ausion and the smart Cane from Saksham / IIT will alert you to an obstacle like a human. Orientation is trickier. When I use the vOICe, I am able to get a scan ahead of me. I focus towards open spaces and walk. If I find objects on either side, I reduce speed. If an object I detected on my left changes position, it is possible that I have changed direction in which case I make a course correction. You could do the same thing if you elect to go this way or use Ausion to quickly scan your environment as you walk. As long as you do not have an obstacle ahead of you, you are oriented correctly.
Mind you, you will use your other skills such as passive echo location to determine if you are in a closed space or not. Remember, people make noise which is a good indicator of distance to them etc. The way sighted people orient themselves is that before they start walking, they fix a visual destination and move towards that. You could do this using the vOICe or you go step-by-step in the general direction until you reach your destination. Hi Pranab, thanks for your detailed explanation. Actually I want this device primarily for my college use. I no the environmental settings but feel the need for something which would alert me of people standing in the corridors. I must admit that I find the walking stick unsuitable because often there is a chance of bumping into somebody and I find the stick obtrusive. Echo location is a good thing but there is not much chance of acquiring advanced capability without a proper expert guidance. I also find walking in a straight line quite challenging and I am interested to know how Ausion can help.
