NEW DELHI: Twenty years after a blind girl was subjected to rape by a
married man under false pretext of marrying her, the Supreme Court on
Thursday came to her rescue and directed Chhattisgarh government to pay
compensation of Rs 8000 per month for rest of her life.

Expressing deep concern over the plight of the 37-year old lady who was
deserted by her family members after the incident, a bench headed by Justice
M Y Eqbal said that government must frame uniform policy to grant relief.

Chhattisgarh government's counsel Atul Jha consented that state was
committed for rehabilitation of the lady who was facing hardship to make her
both ends meet.

The court also upheld conviction of the man who had sexually exploited her
on the false pretext of marriage and sentenced him to undergo seven years of
jail term.
