Website to net stolen cellphones
MUMBAI: A Thane-based software professional has
launched a website that can store important details of
mobile phones, which can help in tracing the phone
in case of theft.
The website
www.cellsafeindia.com
launched jointly by Niranjan Bhosle an automobile
spare part dealer and Abhay Parasnis of Nichola
computers private limited has already attracted mobile
users from all over the globe.
Talking to DNA Bhosle said the idea came to his mind
four years back when, over 7,000 mobile phones were
stolen from the Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati
Temple in Pune. I found that majority of thefts went
undetected as owners could not provide the
International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number
to police. One cannot claim ownership of a phone once
phonebook entries and SMSs are deleted from it. The
only way to establish ownership is to produce
the IMEI number, which majority of people cant
remember, Bhosle said.
The website is designed in such a way that if a thief
tries to register a stolen mobile phone, the date,
IMEI number and IP address of the computer will
be recorded. A trace route is automatically created
every time an attempt is made to get details using
IMEI number from anywhere in the world, Parasnis
said.
Also, a buyer can establish the authenticity of the
seller before buying the phone by logging on to the
website to confirm ownership of the handset, name
of the owner, his alternate mobile number, email id
and police complaint number, if the phone is already
registered. The facility can be availed at Rs100
for three years.
Parasnis has also developed a software to track stolen
phones. The software, when loaded in a handset, will
automatically send a SMS (on the alternate mobile
number) and an email informing the new SIM card
installed along with the time and place of
installation. Although the site is yet to be formally
launched,
more than 3,304 people from all over the world have
visited it site in the last 10 days.
