1. News-

The first phase of making buildings and public places accessible to
the physically challenged is expected to commence by September-end.
The Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with
Disabilities (SSEPD) has sought for a financial estimate from the
Public Works Department and a couple of other agencies for the
project. A total of 50 installations including Government buildings,
convention centres, cultural theatres, parks and community centres
will be made disabled-friendly by the end of this year. A Delhi-based
NGO Samarth conducted the accessibility audit during May-June this
year and submitted the list of establishments to SSEPD Department. The
modifications will be holistic and comprehensive which would cater to
disabilities of all kinds. Absence of ramps or elevators, lack of
Braille signage and non-tactile flooring are some of the problems
which PwDs face on a daily basis. Gates, ramps, elevators, toilets and
waiting halls in buildings will be modified and made user-friendly for
the PwDs. Source:

MINISTER: WIND UP SCHEMES NOT WORKING PROPERLY. Wind up schemes not
working properly. Chalk out schemes which are in the interest of
students. This was stated by Minister of State for Technical Education
(Independent Charge), Deepak Joshi at a meeting of ITI principals here
today. Joshi asked principals to take Skill India Campaign as a
challenge and ensure effective use of available resources. He said
that if prescribed training is not being imparted in private ITIs then
action should be taken against them. Joshi said that every ITI should
chalk out a plan to ensure jobs for minimum 100 students in every 2
months. He directed that students should be helped to get bank loans
on priority. Students should be informed about importance of ITI right
from class IX. Scholarships should be distributed through Samagra
Portal.

ALL INT’L AIRPORTS SOON TO BE DISABLED-FRIENDLY. Lagging behind its
scheduled deadline, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment has finally made the move to fast-track the process of
making all the 22 international airports in the country
disabled-friendly. The Ministry has invited bids to conduct an access
audit of all the international airports to study if they are
accessible to 'divyangs', also known as people with disabilities
(PwDs). This is first of its kind exercise involving India's
international airports to study the barriers, if any, that make
travelling difficult for people suffering from various disabilities,
for the aged and pregnant women. The Department of Empowerment of
People with Disabilities, under the Ministry, has invited bids from
empanelled access auditors for the project under the Centre's Sugamya
Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign). In a bid to achieve
universal accessibility to PwDs as desired by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi's vision of 'Inclusive India', the campaign was launched by Union
Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley and Union Minister of Social Justice
and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot last year on December 3 on the
occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Source:
