IT indestries do not want to spend on the development of Indian
language tools just because of piracy? I don't think so.
Though the issue is beyond the scope of this list, but if it has been
raised here, I can't stop myself to express my views.
It looks strange when we think why hasn't Microsoft yet developped a
Hindi Windows though it has already developped one in Chinees. But if
we scrutinize the issue for a moment, it becomes clearer that we (The
Indians) ourselves are responsible for it.
First and the most obvious reason is that there are too many languages
in our country that developing/supporting an OS for each and every
language is in itself a Herculean task. But to excuse this, one would
say "Why don't they develop it for only few main languages like
Hindi?" The counter argument is "For what and for whom?" Tell me who
cares for Hindi? The computer literate (especially those who are also
well-off) population of our country feel comfortable with English, we
all run for it, we all look down apon person who can't speek it. We
feel shame if we can't speek it properly. So "for what and for whom?"
is the question. In China, it had been (may be till now) mandatory to
speek/work in the mother tung. So, if Microsoft and other corporate
firms want to get anything from the Chinees market, it's only possible
when they offer supportive solutions to their indigenous needs. But
here in India, why do they like to do the same just for poor (because
the rich culture is dominated by English)? We're having one of the
best IT institutions in the world, Infosys like companies raking
through money, but still we have not been able to develop anything
worthy for our indigenous needs. Certainly not because there are
lesser people who believe in buying softwares, but because there are
lesser people who care for such softwares. If a better
(friendly/responsive) indigenous gadgets are developed, there is no
point why people would not buy it. So, lack of interest and commitment
are the main causes of under development of the indigenous softwares
in our country.

Ramit
