  Reservation for the disabled to be ensured

  Thiruvananthapuram: The government has taken steps to ensure that the 3 per 
cent employment reservation for the disabled, allotted through the PSC, will be 
given as and when vacancies arise, Health and Social Welfare Minister P.K. 
Sreemathy has said.
  Inaugurating the World Disabled Day function here on Monday, she said that 3 
per cent job reservation would be given to the disabled in gazetted posts also. 
She said financial aid would be given to the disabled, without APL/BPL 
distinction (above/below poverty line), for purchasing aids that would help 
them get over disabilities. Disabled children studying in Class 1 till 
post-graduation would be given monthly aid ranging from Rs.300 to Rs.1,000 and 
those above 21 years would be given Rs.600 a month as day care allowance. 
Disabled girls or the girl children of disabled couples would be given 
Rs.10,000 as aid for marriage.
  “Advocates who are blind will be given a monthly allowance of Rs.1,000 for 
five years and a one-time assistance of Rs.2,500. Since last September, the 
government has disbursed Rs.39.25 lakh as medical assistance to disabled 
persons,” she said.
  She said that 12 disabled persons had been nominated for the Central 
government’s award for the disabled. She added that all steps had been 
completed for issuing identity cards to the disabled. Ms. Sreemathy said 603 
disabled persons in the State were being given permanent employment orders. The 
first of the orders was handed over to Kannan, a peon at Dental College. Mayor 
C. Jayan Babu, Social Welfare Secretary Usha Titus, V. Sivankutty, MLA were 
present.
