Women and persons with disabilities don’t often know their rights and hence accessing justice is not even an option for them. We are launching the Know Your Rights workshop series with the aim to create awareness about and build capacities on laws and justice mechanisms around violence against women and children with disabilities. The following is the schedule for the workshops: - 9th June 2021: 5:30 to 7pm: Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) Trainer: Dr. Aparna Chandra Dr. Aparna Chandra has worked at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, at Yale Law School as a Tutor in Law, and most recently at National Law University, Delhi as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Centre for Constitutional Law, Policy and Governance. Currently, she is Associate Professor at NLSIU where she teaches Constitutional Law. - 10th June 2021: 5:30 to 7pm: Protection of Women against Domestic Violence Act Trainer: Adv. Audrey D’Mello Audrey D’Mello, joined Majlis in 2007 as a Programme Director where she worked towards streamlining existing programmes around access to justice and evolving monitoring mechanisms. While working in the field of programme implementation, she acquired two formal qualifications, a degree in law from Bombay University and a postgraduate degree in management (specialisation in Governance and Accountability) from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS). - 11th June 2021: 5:30 to 7pm: Criminal Law Amendment Trainer: Adv. Shikha Silliman Bhattacharjee Shikha Silliman Bhattacharjee is a lawyer and researcher whose work takes an interdisciplinary and transnational perspective in understanding the capacity and limitations of the law to address systematic violence for marginalized communities, including persons with disabilities, women, and labour migrants. Shikha holds a BA in English and Ethnicity, Race, and Migration from Yale University, a JD and Certificate in Global Human Rights from University of Pennsylvania Law School, and is pursuing a PhD in Jurisprudence and Social Policy from University of California, Berkeley. Amongst her many research publications, Shikha is the co-author of the Human Rights Watch report “Invisible Victims of Sexual Violence: women with disabilities and access to justice in India”.
