In this episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks with Dr. Sam
Taraporevala, a retired Associate Professor & Head Department of Sociology
and Anthropology of the autonomous St. Xavier's College in Mumbai.

Born blind, his parents chose to educate him in a mainstream school and
college, after which he pursued his PHD.

Between 2002 and 2003, while teaching at St Xavier's College, Dr Sam set out
to explore the reason behind the declining numbers of blind and visually
impaired students in his college, that resulted in the inception of the
famous Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC), one of
the country's finest resource centres for the blind. Fast forward to today,
as an Executive Director, he has been at the forefront of social advocacy,
creating awareness and addressing key access challenges for persons with low
vision and blindness.

His work so far has resulted in the amendment of the Copyright Act, India in
2012; the deployment of over 30,000 accessible ATMs in India; and the
opening up of Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
education for blind and low vision students.

Tune in to listen to Dr Sam's inspiring journey!
