I Am What IIMC Made Me Today: Visually Impaired Samyak Attributes UPSC
Success To Alma Mater
Bhubaneswar: “I am what IIMC has made me today… forever grateful!”,
said Samyak Jain in a Tweet after the UPSC results were declared on
Monday. Jain, who secured an All India Rank of 7, attributed his
success in the UPSC exams to his alma mater, the Indian Institute of
Mass Communication (IIMC).
Jain did his Masters from IIMC and then studied International
Relations at JNU. “When I went to journalism, I became aware of the
problems of the people on the ground. I felt that the IAS service can
give a better opportunity to make a difference in the lives of
people,” he said.
Jain, a resident of Rohini Sector 9, Delhi, credits this success to
his family. In particular, he is grateful to his mother. He said, “I
am visually impaired and I needed an assistant writer for the exam and
my mother did it. The whole family helped. There was a third wave of
Covid and the weather was also bad. My maternal Uncle took me to the
exam centre and waited for the whole time in the rain, till the exam
ended.”
Samyak’s mother Vandana Jain and father Sanjay Jain are government
employees. He added, “When I finished school, I did not have any
problem with my eyes. It all started when I entered my 20s. Writing
and reading became difficult. Struggled a lot. I did my initial
studies in Delhi, then 10-12th from Mumbai, then I graduated from
School of Open Learning, University of Delhi.”
When asked how difficult or easy it is to prepare for Civil Services
for those who are visually impaired? Samyak said, “People with visual
impairment need not panic about this. One can do it with his hard work
and dedication. Books are available online for free in digital format.
The candidate needs to be prepared and have confidence. It will surely
lead to success, the top rank holder added.
