HI All,

I am forwarding a free event around research to involve students with low
vision/blind in learning coding. It's being planned by Ontario Technical
University - a research group that are close collaborators with Mahadeo's
work at CNIB. The event is from 9 am ET to 2 pm ET via zoom. A link to
register can be found the abstract in this email. This is probably best
aimed at students with some background in coding or AI, or educators who
have some familiarity with the field. Apologies for the late notice, we
just received this information last week.
cheers.
Ainsley

Traditionally the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
teaching relies on visual media and the apprenticeship model where students
see, learn, and practice. For example, visual programming employs blocks
representing coding logic that better introduce beginners to writing code
in a drag and drop manner. However, such an approach creates entry barriers
for youth with visual impairments due to the lack of accessible materials
and effective delivery strategies. Our outreach activities aim to
demonstrate an Augmented Reality (AR) instructional system with a social
robot to provide computer programming instructions via a wearable interface
for visually impaired youth. The youth will engage with accessible
programming tools that will empower the employment of digital and physical
prototyping. This event consists of a list of related research
presentations and demonstrations.
