Dear List
Union Bank of India has taken a ground-breaking step in the Indian Banking sector. Very recently Bank has made available NVDA open source screen reader for the use by Official Language officers. This is adopted as an add-on to JAWS screen reader but not a replacement. NVDA screen reading software is available on a centralized location on the intranet for download and install by visually impaired official language officers. The software is made available on the request of official language officers for on the fly multi-language support. This step is a path breaking as now at Union Bank of India, from the day one visually impaired staff members will have a screen reader access till the time they get JAWS software which generally takes some time due to procurement process. It is stated that NVDA screen reader software is supplementary to JAWS screen reader considering its feature of multi languages text-to-speech support for efficiently working in both English and Hindi languages simultaneously. Bank’s accessibility cell “Union Access” has played a coordination role on the request received from official language officers in this pioneering initiative by Union Bank of India. This is another success in the bank’s inclusive and accessible offerings which ranges from Talking ATMs, Union Sparsh Braille debit cards, Accessible Banking webpage, ongoing accessibility improvements, special outreach accounts opening camps, exclusive resources portal named DIVYA on the intranet for employees with disabilities and now adoption of NVDA, an open-source screen reader. Many such initiatives on disability inclusion and accessibility enhancements are underway at Union Bank of India.
