Dear List

Below text is from the WhatsApp group. It is a major issue.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to bring to your attention a critical issue faced by visually
impaired individuals, including myself, when attempting to purchase SIM
cards from various telecommunications service providers such as Airtel,
Vodafone Idea, and Jio. Our inability to scan with our eyes, due to the
absence of retina or iBalls, presents a significant challenge when
attempting to go through the conventional process of SIM card acquisition
at retail outlets.

As visually impaired individuals, we encounter insurmountable difficulties
as retailers rely on eye scanning for SIM card purchases, which creates a
barrier that excludes us from accessing essential telecommunication
services. This impediment not only contravenes our rights but also isolates
us from the benefits of seamless connectivity.

In light of these challenges, we seek the intervention of TRAI to address
this matter. We urge the authority to advocate for and enforce better
regulations and solutions that would ensure equitable access to SIM cards
for persons with visual impairment who lack the ability to scan with their
eyes. We propose the implementation of alternative measures, such as
biometric solutions like fingerprint scanners, to facilitate the purchase
of SIM cards, thereby ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all.

It is imperative that the regulatory framework governing SIM card purchases
is adapted to accommodate the needs of the visually impaired community,
enabling us to exercise our right to procure essential telecommunication
services independently and with dignity.

We earnestly request TRAI to take proactive steps to revise and implement
regulations that embrace the principles of universal design and
accessibility, addressing the specific challenges faced by visually
impaired individuals during the process of SIM card purchases.

We are confident that with your support and advocacy, a more inclusive and
accessible framework can be established, promoting the empowerment and
independence of persons with visual impairment in the domain of
telecommunications.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to the
implementation of measures that uphold the rights and dignity of
individuals with visual impairment in accessing telecommunication services.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Doctor Sonal Dubey
