Dear list, I’ve been using Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and found them to be extremely helpful in various situations—reading text aloud, navigating in shopping malls, identifying surroundings, navigating unfamiliar places, and even communicating hands-free while multitasking.  Sharing my initial thoughts and a brief comparison on this new offering from Meta. Now, with the launch of the Oakley Meta HSTN, Meta has expanded its offering with a new generation of performance-focused AI eyewear that promises even greater functionality, especially for those with active lifestyles or specific accessibility needs. Developed in collaboration with Oakley, the Meta HSTN glasses represent a shift from fashion to function. While the Ray-Ban Meta glasses focused more on lifestyle and casual use, the Oakley Meta HSTN is purpose-built for athletes, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts. The most noticeable upgrade is the 3K front-facing camera, which captures high-resolution photos and videos with remarkable clarity—far superior to the 1080p camera in the Ray-Ban model. This is especially useful when you want to document something visually and need crisp detail, whether it’s reading a noticeboard from a distance or sharing a real-time view with someone during navigation. The Meta AI assistant remains a key feature, allowing for hands-free interaction through voice commands. You can ask questions, get directions, take photos, play music, or make calls—all by simply speaking. This feature is particularly valuable for blind and low vision users who prefer non-touch interaction or who are on the go. The AI is integrated into both Ray-Ban and Oakley models, but in the HSTN, it’s supported by a sportier, more durable design. Battery life is another major improvement. The Oakley Meta HSTN offers up to 8 hours of continuous usage on a single charge, compared to about 4 hours on the Ray-Ban glasses. The charging case extends usage by an additional 48 hours, making them much more reliable for all-day or travel use. From a design standpoint, the Oakley HSTN glasses are lightweight yet rugged, with IPX4 splash resistance to withstand sweat and light rain. The lens options include Oakley’s signature PRIZM lenses (which enhance contrast and color), polarized options for reducing glare, transitions for light sensitivity, and prescription lenses for users who need vision correction. This range of choices makes them more adaptable to different visual needs. While both glasses use open-ear audio, the Oakley model is geared toward those who may be outdoors or in motion, offering clearer sound without blocking environmental noise—a feature particularly beneficial for safety during navigation.
