Also, the scanned material is in formats that you might not be familiar with.

If you are considering reading symbols with a screen reader like Jaws, you need 
to understand that Jaws recognises limited symbols. In fact it does not 
recognise almost all of the greek and roman letters that are widely used in 
mathematics. Press insert + 4 to see a short list of symbols that jaws 
recognises.

Making mathematics accessible is a different ball game all together.
