If I am not wrong, sometimes, pressing tab is also useful. Means, suppose you are in column 1 with 4 columns, and you want to just enter data in column 2 and 4, according to your question, when your cursor is in column 1, just press tab and you will land in column 2, enter your desired data and again press tab twice so you will land on column 4. Just as to share, when you are in the last row, when you press tab while you are in the last cell of the table, word will create a row automatically.
