Since my name end in 'I', of late I have been recceiving invites from
Sindis to join their network (smile). I think not knowing names or the
gender of people is fun in some senses. Unless you don't really see the
fun part, you would take it seriously.

Sorry, this was sitting in my Draft Folder, so just posting it today.

Hello Amaiyo,
Good thread you picked up for name clarifications. I too am confused
over a
lot of East Indian names and paticipants of AI. And Shadab, assumably
a
male himself, seems to be even more confused as he has addressed me as
Ms
Amarjit in his mail of below. No, dear Shadab, this Amarjit is a male
Amarjit, but I mentioned I had two female cousins who too were named as
Amarjit.
And, Amaiyo is right about Punjabi and particularly Punjabi Sikh names
being used interchangeably for both genders. However, one can always
distinguish the gender as Singh is used by the Sik males and Kaur is
used by
Sikh females. More and more Sikhs nowadays are reverting to using
distinctive names e.g. Powar, Pawar, Paur, Gill, Dhillon, Cheema,
Aurora,
Dhaliwal, Saini etc. etc. (the list is endless) Since some last names
were
connected to the Hindu caste system, the tenth and last Guru of the Sikh
faith, Guru Gobind Singh ji, wanted to create equality and uniformity in
the
Sikh faith and bestowed the name Singh for all males, or meaning lion,
and
Kaur for all females, or meaning princess. Most committed Sikh still
continue to stand steadfast to ending the last name as Singh e.g. Indian
Prime Minister, His Excellency, Manmohan Singh and His good wife as
Gursharan Kaur.

Coming to the name Kiran, we had two
family friends while living in Africa, and one had his daughter named
Kiran
and the other had his son named as Kiran. These names are used
interchangeably. Pretty hard to distinguish untill antefixed by Singh
or
Kaur.
Well, so much about Sikh/Punjabi names.
Amarjit
