>From roadside vendors to cabbies, everyone's taken note of the new
10-rupee coin. For some, the gold-and-silver design is fascinating,
while others are
kicked by the idea of having a coin that most others. But one thing's
for sure - no one's giving these babies away.

When this reporter tried to buy bhel using one of these coins, the
vendor let out a tiny smirk before quickly tossing it into his pocket.
Though he looked
a bit let down when he was asked to swap it with a note of the same
value, he was excited to take about it anyway.

"Of course I've seen this coin before! I've got two so far from my
customers. I kept them safely and admired them for a while, and then I
sent them off
to my village. It's a new coin, everyone back home must be fascinated by
it," said Pappu Kumar, who conducts his business outside the BMC
Headquarters
at Fort.

Taxi driver Satish Shette hesitated for a minute before pulling out his
wallet and showing the 10-rupee coin he's been guarding with his life.
"I got it
10 days ago from a passenger, but I'm not going to give it to anyone.
I'll take it to my village on my next trip home," he said. When the
photographer
said in jest that he should swap the coin with him for a note, he
hollered, "Mat na!"

Rashid Sheikh, who sells toys in the CST Subway, was equally in awe.
"I've seen a couple with my friends but I never had my own. I'm going to
hold on to
this one," he said while carefully observing the intricacies of the
design.

Vendors say customers, too, want to get their hands on these coins. "My
customers gladly take them when I offer them as change - it's a
different coin
and everyone wants one," said cold drinks vendor Amar Kokatay, who also
runs a stall in the subway.

Bus conductor Anil Kadam was less enthralled, but paused for a moment to
have a close look at the coin nonetheless.

"I've been getting a lot of these coins from commuters of late," he
said, looking slightly disappointed as he added, "I can't save any of
them because
I have to be deposit all the money I collect with the BEST."

Our cash-saving advice: swap in all your notes for these coins and you'd
probably never spend a rupee.
