Dear Moiz,

It is not unusual to have such a large number of files since your c drive also has the operating system and operating system has a lot of files. As for defrag program is concerned, it does not reduce the file numbers. When you write some file the data is stored in the sector available after the previous entry. So if you open and work in 5 different files and then open the first file again and write to it, the data is not stored where the previous data in the same file was stored but after the data of the fifth file. Thus your files are fragmented which naturally leaves empty spaces on your disk and computer also takes more time in reading different parts of the same file which are stored at different locations on your disk. Defrag program moves these data to the same place for each file and saves space and also action time, which enhances the speed of the computer. So, you should regularly use it.

Sandeep

Hello People
I find that my C drive has more than 200000 files. Is this a cause for
worry? I got the numbers when I finished scanning the computer for
viruses. Is there any way I can decrease the number of files?
Will defragmenting help? What purpose does disc defragmentation serve
actually? Can I go ahead given the fact that the C drive also has my
operating system installed?
Please help.
