WORLD RANKING OF UNIVERSITIES


In its Silver jubilee year, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has 
become undisputed No 1 as per ranking in various websites.

As per World largest Universities by student enrolment on 
Internet(Wikipedia,the free encyclopedia), & Top Universities Ranking Guide, 
IGNOU tops the list of 61 Universities,(30 lacs students) followed by Allama 
Iqbal Open University-Pakistan (18 lacs), Islamic Azad University-Iran (13 
lacs), Anadolu University-Turkey (8.84 lacs),Bangladesh National University- 
Bangladesh (8 lacs), Bangladesh Open University-Bangladesh (6 lacs), 
Ramkhamhaeng University-Thailand (5.25 lacs), & University System of Ohio-USA 
(4.78 lacs) 

Dr. B.R Ambedkar Open University, Andhra Pradesh, India rank at number 9 (4.5 
lacs) along with University of Punjab-Pakistan(4.5 lacs),State University of 
New York-USA(4.5 lacs),California State University-USA(4.17 lacs).University of 
Delhi, India gets 13th rank(4 lacs).

IGNOU has reached the top slot due to its high flexibility, number of courses 
in diverse fields, quality course material and holding its exams semester wise 
twice a year uninterrupted for the past 25 years.

The university began by offering two academic programmes in 1987, i.e Diploma 
in Management and Diploma in Distance Education ,with a strength of 4528 
students. Today it serves the educational aspirations of over 3 lacs in India 
and 36 other countries through the 21 Schools of Studies and a network of 61 
regional centres, around 60 overseas centres. The University offer about 350 
certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral programmes with a strength of around 
420 faculty members and academic staff at the Headquarters and regional centres 
and about 36,000 academic counselors from conventional institutions of higher 
learning, professional organizations and industry among others. 

As an inclusive institution, it is a part of IGNOU's mandate to reach the 
unreachable, the underprivileged and the differently-abled. It is for this 
reason that the University's educational and vocational programmes are geared 
to ensure that people at the margins of our society are able to equip 
themselves with the knowledge and skills required to confidently join the 
mainstream.
