Another trick working in my case, is to open the mobile version of GMAIL and
then you'll be directly taken to basic html once you sign in.
Then you can set it as default.

When your gmail is loading you will get the link "Load as basic view".
You
need to click that. I faced similar problem. If your internet speed is
fast you will not get time to click the link as it comes while your page
is loading. Better you take sited assistance.
Friends correct me if I am wrong. Its just my experience.
