Taking back-up of the whole HD will need huge space, but since you have
mentioned documents, then sites like adrive.com, (which provide you decent
space of 50 GB for free), can be an option.
store the documents in private folders, which are inaccessible to public.
Security parameters such as storing in private folders, encrypting your
documents, password-protection, etc. will need to be looked at based on the
website's specifics. As I used it long back, so I would prefer not
commenting on the exact steps to be followed for that. However, what I would
say that this site has a good reputation according to the blogs which I
follow.
If you are open towards paying (based on the importance of the documents to
be backed-up), then surely there will be secured online solutions too
primarily intended to be used by corporates. Though for now there is nothing
striking in my mind of that sort.
Using external storage devices is a better option. And even from security
point, that satisfies oneself mentally though today there are ways to keep
the things secure in online databases. Anyways based on your current
requirements, these might be irrelevant observations.

Amar Jain.
