The crux of the matter is that if a totally blind person ventures unescorted, many such potentially difficult situations are bound to occur. One may get through them by asking for human help. It is better to have one's private escort in such situations, if one can afford it, it is readily available and there are no privacy concerns. However, such private escort should not become a sine qua non for your essential works. But the last statement is aspirational to a large extent, and is also contingent on what is meant by essential. In simple words, it is a private choice not to be frowned upon if one insists on a private escort.
