TALKS & Phone basics
For mobile phones without a touch screen, the Nuance Accessibility
Suite does not change the user interface, except for the following:
• One key is used to initiate TALKS&ZOOMS commands. By default, this
can be the [Edit], [Menu], or the [Chr] key, depending upon the actual
handset. We will refer to this as the [TALKS] key from now on.
• The various S60 3rd Edition phones have many of the same keys. Among
these are two “soft” keys, which are located below the display. A soft
key varies in function; it performs the function described in the
label that appears above it in the display. In this guide, the left
soft key is called [Key 1], and the right soft key is called [Key 2].
• [Up], [Down], [Left], [Right]: Navigate through menus by moving the
joystick upward, downward, to the left, or to the right. This guide
refers to the four positions of the joystick as navigation keys. The
navigation keys enable you to perform actions such as moving the
cursor in a text field and scrolling through a list or menu. Some S60
phones let you assign an application to each of these keys.

Reading DAISY & audio books with DAISY2Go
What is DAISY2Go
NuanceDaisy2go is a player for DAISY books for mobile phones. Daisy2go
is a part of the NuanceAccessibility Suite, and it has been optimized
for the Nuance TALKS screen reading software.
Daisy2go supports the navigation features of the DAISY format. It
allows navigation by headings, pages, phrases, time or percentage. It
is easy to set bookmarks, resume playback from the last read position,
increase or decrease the playback speed without pitch changes and
search the book for specific word or phrase.
Supported phones
DAISY2go supports the mobile phones running S60 3rd and 5th Edition
such as NOKIA C5, E5, E6 etc. A list of supported phones is available
on the Nuance website.
Supported formats
DAISY2go can play books that conform to either DAISY 2.02 or DAISY 3
specifications. DAISY2go can also be used to read text-only books such
as those available from Bookshare. DAISY2go has a DAISY-fy function
which provides access to MP3 files with features like cueing, speed
adjustment, bookmarks etc.

Opening books
To open a book on a mobile phone which has DAISY2go, you first need to
copy the book into the phone memory and then add it to the DAISY2go
bookshelf. Follow these steps to open a book:

Use of the GPS Maps application for navigation

Courtesy: Harish Kotian
I have used Nokia E72 handset with Talks v 5.2 although I have
mentioned Talks as the screen reader, the instructions holds good for
Mobile speak as well.
Preparing GPS
1. Go to Control panel, Settings, general, positioning, positioning
method. It may be different in other models.
2. You may select Integrated GPS and preferably also Assisted GPS
(AGPS) if available on your phone. This is optional and helps in
acquiring satellite signals quickly. If you have external blue tooth
GPS, then you will have to select this as well.
Configuring

1. There are three folders which you will have to use. Maps, Landmarks
and GPS data. Maps is usually found in the main Menu and the other 2
under Applications. I created a GPS folder in my Main menu and moved
all these into it. This becomes convenient to use.

2. Go to Maps and select it. After a while Talks will say drive. Now press
key1.
3. When Talks says Account, come down and select Settings
4. When Talks says Internet, connection online if you want the search
to be done so. If you will unselect it, search will be off-line. I
have found, online gives better search. However, even off-line you get
pretty good results in searching for a place.
5. Network destination should be internet
6. Press key 2 to return back to settings
7. Select Navigation
8. In both voice guidance for drive and walk select the language with
street names. Initially, it may have to download it from the net;
hence it is advisable to do when you have a WIFI connection. Else you
will have to incur GPRS charges.
For English, Hindi and Tamil, you may not need to download from the
net. Sometimes you don't hear the voice guidance, for which you will
have to raise the volume up.
Getting Started
1. You are now ready to go. Go to an open area, may be your terrace,
balcony or window. A place where you can get signals from the
satellite. Initially, it takes a very long time to acquire the
satellite. About 30 minutes. Better use GPRS and try it with AGPS on.
2. Select landmark, Key 1 and select new landmark
3. Select current location to save the place where you are now. Once
your GPS acquires satellite, it will fill the Latitude and longitude
fields. Give it a name and save this position. Alternatively you can
use the map or enter it manually.
4. Henceforth, you will select this landmark and press Key1 and select
show route
5. After a while Talks says add new point. Move to GPS status. Talks
says GPS status, No GPS connection, No GPS position. This means,
your phone is awaiting signals from satellite. Once it picks it, it
will tell you the quality of connection, like good, poor etc., the
name of the nearest road and number of satellites. In case, you are
traveling by vehicle and you want to essentially know where you are
presently, this will keep refreshing as and when you change streets.
6. If you want to change between walk and drive, in GPS status, move
your cursor right. Selecting will toggle between walk and drive. I
have found by toggling this, the satellite acquisition is faster.
There should be no reason what so ever for this to happen, this is
just my observation. It may be coincidental.
7. In case you need voice navigation, you will press key 1 only after
acquiring satellite. Talks says, calculating route. Wait for a while
and again press Key1. Press Key 1 one more time and Talks says Start
driving or walking depending what you chose in step 5. Bingo! You
start getting turn by turn navigation. Again, you can use the volume
button to adjust the announcement level.
8. Pressing 3 shall give you a search box. I have found that this
takes the distances of places progressively. So, if you select
underground stations you can know the distances of the nearby bus
stations. Please don't ask me why bus stations are called underground
stations. I have no answer for this <smile>.
9. To save your own route, set your destination, when you reach select
save route and give it a meaningful name.
10. In the Main Maps folder you will find favourites and here you will
find your favourite routes. Select it and choose drive or walk
guidance.
11. In the search under the Main Maps, the search is very good. You
can type a keyword and returns good results. You can also choose by
Category.

Whenever you select a place, it will show up in the history.
Now-a-days, whenever I want to use the OVI maps, I go to Maps, Drive
and either I choose drive home or choose Set destination. Here again I
choose between history, favourites or search depending on the
situation. This makes the process much simpler.

Talks and long Key 2 gives you additional information like area, speed etc.
