Subject: [AI] All that glitters is not gold!

Dear all Access Indians,

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has warned that fake hallmarking units are flourishing in various parts of the country. Hallmarks as official marks have been in use as a guarantee for the purity of gold and silver. However, some recent raids conducted by the BIS have underlined the proverb: All that glitters is not gold! BIS, the national standards body, is operating the hallmarking scheme for gold and silver to protect the public from adulteration. BIS recognizes assaying and hallmarking centres across the country through a process of systematic assessment. These recognized centres receive gold and silver from jewelers, test their purity and then apply hallmark on them declaring their tested purity level, according to an official communication. BIS officials, who conducted a raid at a shop in Thrissur in Kerala recently, found that a firm named Goldstar Assaying and Hallmarking Centre Private Ltd was involved in various malpractices. Officials said that they had seized nearly 4 kg of gold which had been spuriously hallmarked. "The jewellery was also sealed by the BIS and action is being taken to derecognize the centre," said H Ajay Khanna, deputy director of BIS. According to sources, several such illegal units are functioning across the country to give fake hallmarks to gold and silver. There are nearly 200 assaying centres certified by BIS across the country. BIS officials urge the customers, when buying the gold, to check the BIS symbol, quality of the gold, logo of the hallmarking centre and jeweler's identification mark on the ornaments. If there is any violations, people can contact BIS officials to lodge a formal complaint from their respective cities.

"The gold is forever, it is beautiful, useful, and never wears out. Small wonder that gold has priced over all else, in all ages, as the source of value that will survive the travails of life and the ravages of time." James Blakely.

"Gold is a treasure, he who possesses it does all he wishes to in this world, and succeeds in helping the souls into paradise." Christopher Columbus.

"Gold opens all the locks, but no lock holds against the power of the gold." George Herbert.

"Gold is not necessary, I have no interest in gold, we'll build a solid state, without an ounce of gold behind it, anyone who sells above the set prices, let him be marched off to a concentration, it's the bastion of money." Adolf Hitler.

Warm regards.
David Richards.
