Mind, fine reader engine is being used by almost all the scanning and reading softwares. I've seen that with Openbook, Kurzweil and so on.

And its my personal believe that ABBYY finereader is very good at scanning, it gives better result in word as well as Pdf, it is better than kurzwail wwhile scanning, though Kurzwail has many more assistive features which could surpass finereader specially for Visually challenge. Though as i said it is far better wihle giving scanned result. And thus for my study purpose ABBYY finereader is very helpful. Hope it can give you an overview.
