Barrierbreak launched the BarrierBreak <http://barrierbreak.com/assistive-technology/visual-impairment/gaming/barri erbreak-tactile-cube.html> Tactile Cube - an adaptive puzzle game for the visually and the learning impaired. For those who aren't familiar, the cube, also known as a magic or the Rubik cube is a very popular puzzle amongst the sighted folks. There are various cubes - starting from 2x2 cubes to all the way till 5 x 5 cubes. Think of the cube as multiple columns and rows of square boxes. In this game, you have to shuffle the cube and then restore it to its original position. You can twist and turn the cube in any direction to solve the same. The tactile cube by Barrierbreak is made accessible for the blind, people with low vision, colour blindness and the learning impaired; I am going to share the strategies which worked for me as a blind person. To begin with, you need to first get oriented with the different shapes provided in the cube. The cube has been adapted by adding shapes to each of the blocks. So now, you can feel the different shapes like Triangle, Circle, Star, Diamond, Hexagon and Semi-circle. Once you get familiar with the cube, decide which row you want to solve first. Once you get to a cell containing a particular shape, say for example, a circle; hold the cell with one hand, and feel the cube until you find the cell which has the same shape i.e. circle with another hand. Twist and position it in front of the cell that you were holding. If you are able to get 2 circles in front of each other, then one of row is solved. In this way you have to solve the cube for other rows as well. Enjoy the fun of solving the puzzle and keep your mind active!
