Background: Students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and those with disabilities often encounter a multitude of unique challenges in spaces of higher education, independent of a further possibility of marginalization on the lines of regional identities, language, class, religion, gender, etc. The proposed conference proposes to facilitate thought and discussion on the impediments to equal opportunities for students, and to venture further to explore mechanisms for resolution of such challenges. The conference shall aim to evaluate different models and strategies for promoting equality in opportunities, and serve as a platform for interaction between stakeholders to share their perspectives, concerns and expertise. Efforts towards ensuring non-discrimination in opportunities to students have included action at the governmental level through various laws, policies, scholarships, schemes, etc.; at the institutional level to implement institution specific policies; and also at an organizational/ individual level through novel initiatives. The conference shall seek to build a constructive debate for the convergence of members from across the spectrum of stakeholders to promote learning and cohesion in action. It is envisaged that the conference program would inter alia comprise of discussions on legislative and policy initiatives; students' perspectives on challenges in the academic sphere including difficulties encountered in hostels, eating spaces, mobility across campuses, etc.; remedies available including public interest litigation for enforcement of legal rights; outcomes of adopted approaches with a focus on knowledge sharing; evolution of good practices; building of stakeholder networks for collaboration and pooling of resources, etc. This important academic event would provide an opportunity to bring together scholars, experts and writers, enable intense interactions, promote an exchange of ideas and experiences, and foster fellowship. The conference shall include invited lectures and symposia, panel discussions, free papers, film screenings as well as other oral and audio-visual presentations. Thus, papers, symposia, panels and other presentations are invited on various aspects of the conference theme and sub-themes. Guidelines for the same are enclosed. It shall be our endeavor to extend local hospitality to the participants. However, since complimentary accommodation at the JNU Guest House is limited, you are requested to register early. We look forward to seeing you at the conference, and to your active participation. Sincerely, Manu Mittal Conference Convener Organising Committee Prof. Manu Mittal Dr. Shivaji Kumar Sh.
