Blind activists under the banner of Rashtriya Drishti Sangh Bachao
Sangharsh Samiti staged a dharna (protest) at Jantar Mantar in the
capital today demanding dismissal of National Federation of the Blind
(NFB) general secretary Santosh Kumar Rungta in connection with
alleged misuse of funds meant for the welfare of the blind people.

Nearly 100 workers and leaders of the association gathered at Jantar
Mantar and raised slogans against Rungta.

The activists have been demanding that a probe into the charges of
financial irregularities against Rungta worth crores of rupees. They
want the bank accounts of his family and near relatives living abroad
to be investigated in relation to disproportionate assets.

The protestors criticized the general secretary for sudden closure of
the welfare schemes as training and manufacturing centres for the
blind. The workers slammed him for non-payment of basic remuneration
as on  minimum wages norms.

The activists also sought time to meet home minister Rajnath Singh in
the issue and  thousands of activists will gather at Jantar Mantar  on
April 15 and 16 if no action taken against Rungta.

Their demands include a probe into the charges of financial
irregularities against Rungta worth crores of rupees, the  bank
accounts of his family and near relatives living abroad to be
investigated, training and manufacturing centres be opened and
immediate reimbursement of their salary on government norms.

The DTMT couldn't reach Rungta  as his phone was switched off
throughout the day.
