The easy fix for this would be to break it in to multiple CD commands: >............................deleted open ftp7.netscape.com chdir pub/communicator/smartupdate/english chdir windows/windows95ornt/407/navigator_sta I suspect that there was more to this, but... My first time on a site, I tend to do a dir at each directory level. It lets my know of other options on the way up, and helps when a name in between is mis-spelled. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:31:28 PST From: "Jerel D. Pursuant to Uzi's note, I went to Robert Jungs' site http://www.arjsoftware.com/ and read the FAQ. See these excerpts: What is the difference between ARJ and JAR? We now have two archiver products to meet various compression needs. We developed the new archiver, JAR16/JAR32, so that we could provide state of the art data compression with solid archiving techniques and new compression algorithms. These improvements could not be added to ARJ without introducing serious compatibility issues with older releases of ARJ. JAR16/JAR32 compresses significantly better than ARJ and PKUNZIP for many files and provides long filename support for both Windows 95 and Windows NT. JAR16/JAR32 duplicates much of ARJ's powerful functionality and provides new original functionality, too. However, it does not duplicate ARJ and requires more system resources (memory and cpu power) to run. ARJ has the advantage of a large installed base, a simple archive format, significant third party software support, and a long history of reliable performance. In addition, ARJ has many more archiver functions than other archivers including JAR16/JAR32. Can I use ARJ and JAR together? ARJ and JAR can be used on the same computer; however, ARJ and JAR are not archive compatible. They have similar commands and functions but they cannot process one another's archives. What do I need to be able to run ARJ or JAR? ARJ runs in DOS 2.11 and above and requires a minimum of 512K memory. JAR runs in DOS 3.0 and requires a minimum of 640K memory, or for the Windows version, 8MB of installed memory. The stupid site uses frames so I can't point you to the JAR download page: JAR 1.02 Current release for US users only (primary site) (about 520 Kbytes) ftp://ftp.std.com/pub/jar/jar102.exe JAR 1.02 Current release for US users only (secondary site) ftp://members.aol.com/arjsoftdir/files/jar102.exe JAR 1.02 Current release for international users only (primary site) ftp://ftp.std.com/pub/jar/jar102x.exe JAR 1.02 Current release for international users only (secondary site) ftp://members.aol.com/arjsoftdir/files/jar102x.exe If anybody knows differently, I'd like to know which JAR is which? -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Feb 1999 01:27:50 +0200 From: Uzi Paz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Decompress .jar file! > Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 23:18:22 +0800 > From: Harun <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > I have already download JAR compressor, but when I used it to extract that > *.JAR file, it didn't recognised it. Also JAR readme file written the > archive extension is .J, not .JAR > BTW, the file which I am going to extract is g32e407.jar, Netscape > Navigator. It seems that there are two different things that are called JAR. One of them is the JAR software that uses a format which is called JAR format, and has the extension ".j" (something that I learned only now from Aaron (Harun) ), and another format that is for Java archives and has the extension .jar , I still cannot say for sure how you can decompress and open such .jar archive. In the meanwhile, after Gerry and I responded to your first question in this thread, we had some private correspondence about the subject. Some text that I got during this correspondence said the following: >Jar was invented a few years ago by the author of ARJ (Robert Jung) as a >more efficient archiver/compressor, and he then said that the name meant >that this is like arj but different. Arj was invented before Java >applets. Summary: JAR files are packaged with the ZIP file format, so you can use them for "ZIP-like" tasks such as lossless data compression, archiving, decompression, and archive unpacking. To perform basic tasks with JAR files, you use the JavaTM Archive Tool provided as part of the Java Development Kit. Because the Java Archive tool is invoked by using the jar command, for convenience we'll call it the This text although not too clear, suggests that the format is compatible with ZIP. My suggestion for you is to try to use simple unzip utility. For your consideration: many unzip utilities require that the file will have the extension ".zip" so you might want to rename your file before trying.
