Hi,

Using the services of VirusTotal ( http://www.virustotal.com/ ), it's
possible to scan for virus/worm/malware/badware of various types and using
various scanners. There is an email interface (page describing this
requires JavaScript-enabled browser, and the entire site is also heavily
dependent on it). There is a web uploader form, but it has the
disadvantage of requiring the session to stay alive while the scan is done,
which could be time-consuming under heavy load (the site itself recommends
the email interface at these times).

To scan files by email, send them as attachments to
scan<at>virustotal<dot>com. The message text is ignored. The subject
field has to be either "SCAN" or "SCAN-"; the latter means that VirusTotal
doesn't submit suspicious files to antivirus labs if found. The results
are sent back as very readable plaintext. I'm finding this very useful
while on Linux with muttng (a textmode email client), especially when
browsing the web is less javascript-capable with a textmode browser.

Enjoy, and a happy new year to all here present.

Cheers,
Sabahattin
