I've been thinking about this alot. They are a pretty big feature to add and 
pretty similar to what iterators do already (though they are far more 
powerful). I think we can keep around the current iterator interface in one 
form or another, to provide backwards compatilibity. 

The few things we need: 
1) Passing options to iterators on scan time
2) General exec of an iterator from the client side (no scanning necessary)
3) Adding hooks where necessary in the rest of the system (pre-put, post-put, 
log rolling, tablet starting, etc)

This is definitely doable and would go a long way to improving accumulo.
