The changes look good; I am evaluating whether it would be a good idea to merge
the changes back to 1.4 before closing. (This is not our recommended merge
direction; normally we would make changes in the branch and merge to trunk.
However, it might be better for our users if we slipped these changes in before
the 1.4.0 release.)
