In my case is just the opposite: I know Perl more than Python and usually 
prefer Perl over Python, because in my experience Perl proved to be easier to 
port across several
systems with predictable results.
However I do not see any great problem with using Python for scripting, if you 
are confortable with it.

I think in the long run it would be much more useful to rewrite things in 
pure-ANSI-C, rather than python. I do not see much benefit switching between 
two scripting
languages, while writing it in ANSI-C, if properly done, will allow to have a 
library of functions that can be accessed from many high level and low level 
languages.

In any case I will suggest to remove the extension in the scripts in bin/. This 
will avoid confusion in case of language switching.
