I tried that and:

It _only_ happens with ACPI enabled, acpi=off resolves the problem.



 ~ $ grep ACPI_VIDEO /usr/src/linux-2.6.15.1/.config
# CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO is not set

So, the answer to your second question is yes it does.

ACPI off = good
ACPI on + CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO=n = crash
