On the 2.6.15 there is no more output coming out, which means I guess what you speculate of init functions not being called at all. In contrast the 2.6.13.5 provides a huge trail of extra information (I can provide that if it makes any difference). Unfortunately, I cannot at this time grab the boot sequence log of the kernel that crashes.
